Decommissioning Your Swimming Pool

In the UK it is common for swimming pool owners to ‘shut down’ their pools and spas during the winter time in the belief that lowering the pool water and draining down the equipment will help prevent damage to the systems.

Here at UK Swimming Pools ltd we believe that although the United Kingdom does experience extremes of weather both hot and cold, swimming pools and spa’s suffer less damage if left in minor operation during the cold winter months. The fact that ‘Moving’ water has to be colder to freeze, gives room to allow the inlets of a pool and spa function during the winter time. If the pool is set to standard filter mode with the surface water skimmers and inlets working in good operation, then the surface water will ‘move’ allowing the temperature to drop lower without freezing. By keeping the water in liquid form it prevents damage occurring to the pool tile band and water run through system. You can see below some examples of frost and cold weather damage to mosaic tile bands and pool deck areas.

If however you want to shut down your pool during the cold winter months then here are a few points to note prior to leaving the zone for the winter.

DE-COMMISSIONING.

  1. Lower pool water below skimmers [first shutting off skimmer valves.]
  2. Place half full floatation drums in pool water to allow for frozen expansion’
  3. Shut of electrical supply.
  4. Open filter keg drain point, and drain keg.
  5. Drain down exterior heat pumps and boilers.
  6. Open drain plugs in pump body and drain pump.
  7. Disconnect pump couplings and remove pump.
  8. Remove all water from pump body.
  9. Place pool cover, solar/debris on pool.
